For those of you unfamiliar with the Trayvon Martin story (which may be a couple of you guys since some of you are outside of my dear ol' U.S.), let me update you...
Back in February, a 17-year-old African-Amercian boy was walking home from the store where he had gone to get his future step-brother some candy. It was windy and raining, so the young man, who was wearing a hoodie, had his hood pulled up. To his misfortune, neighborhood watch captain 28-year-old George Zimmerman saw him and declared him "suspicious." Yeah...young, black kid walking on the street wearing a hoodie is apparently automatically suspicious...So, he called 911 and reported this "suspicious" sight. He told them he was going to follow this kid and find out what trouble he was up to. 911 told this guy to leave the kid alone and they would take care of anything that needed taking care of. He ignored the instructions and followed the kid, informing the operator that the kid was unarmed. That's right. This "suspicious" character did not have a weapon while he was walking down a public street. So, he got out of his car (yeah, he was following this pedestrian with his car) and confronted the boy while still on the phone with 911. The tapes then recorded sounds of a struggle along with someone screaming in the background. Then there was the gunshot. George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin in, what he calls, self-defense.
Okay...Zimmerman spotted a young, black boy walking in the rain with his hood up and decided he was up to no good. He notified the authorities who told him to back off and let them do their jobs. Zimmerman ignored these instructions and, not only proceeded to continue following this boy, but also decided a confrontation was in order. So, he instigated a fight with this 17-year-old boy and ended up shooting this unarmed child and claiming he did so because his life was in danger...Yeah...I'm not buying what this guy is selling. Are you?
Apparently the Florida authorities were...at least, for a while. Seems they finally gotten off their...tails and are doing something about this guy. Almost two months after Trayvon Martin was hunted down and murdered, George Zimmerman will now face murder charges. It only took the state's attorney of Florida stepping down and letting someone else do what he should have done all along. It only took the entire country screaming out for justice for this young man to get the authorities to step in and say, "Okay, he was wrong. We'll make him accountable for it." George Zimmerman never should have had the last two months of freedom to walk around and live his life. He never should have gotten away from that scene without his hands locked in cuffs. But he did...and for two months he has been touting racial stereotypes and stilted statistics to justify his own racism and repulsive, hate-motivated actions. Now, the authorities have finally stepped up. May justice smile on young Trayvon Martin and lead George Zimmerman deep into the depths of the Florida State Corrections System where he belongs.
Rest well, Trayvon. May your family one day find the peace that we know you have.
